Character Information
Name: Nadja Cravensworth
Series: What We Do in the Shadows (FX series)
Appearance: here!
Age: ~500 years, give or take.
Canon Point: end of S1
Canon History: here!

Personality: Nadja is old enough and has been around the block enough times to have developed a dry sense of humor, often so dry that she’s the only one who knows she’s joking. Certainly, her husband and housemates often fail to pick up on it. However, this should not under any circumstance be mistaken for a high intelligence. Being that she’s hundreds of years old, one might think that she’s had some degree of education, but Nadja seems to have made very little effort to educate herself over the centuries. Her knowledge of modern technology is majorly outdated, for example, and she fails to understand a whole lot of things that are potentially serious. Nor is she a good liar, or quick on her feet.

Being as she’s a vampire, Nadja has violent tendencies and a short temper, and can go feral on a moment’s notice: she’s shown chasing her husband around with a sword, threatening to kill him as she floats several feet off the ground, fangs bared. The next minute she’ll be sweet and affectionate. Age has magnified her personality and polarized her extremes in remarkable ways. Though she isn’t smart by average standards, she still has her own brand of low cunning, and she’s definitely smarter than both Laszlo and Nandor, which means she spends a lot of time rolling her eyes at the two of them and their shenanigans.

Despite her often-intimidating demeanor, Nadja has a soft spot for people who are looked down on, teased, and outcast like she once was as a human. She takes Guillermo’s LARP friend, Jenna, under her wing, turns her into a vampire, and helps her hunt and eat and discover her special vampire talent, because she didn’t have someone there to help her with her own “dark transition”. She genuinely cares about Jenna, about the people who are othered the way she’s been othered.

Other things about Nadja: she’s somewhat childish and loves to play jokes and pranks, even if those pranks are actually pretty threatening. She also delights in bending humans to her whims, using her vampire hypnosis for minor things like getting into a frat party so Jenna can hunt. Finally, she’s something of a hopeless romantic. Nadja is devoted to Laszlo after a fashion, since they’ve been together for around two hundred years, but she also has always burned a candle for her old flame, Gregor. Despite him reincarnating in many forms: man, woman, and beast alike, Nadja has loved Gregor with a passion through decapitation after decapitation, like a true vampire lover ought to.

Abilities: As a vampire, Nadja is faster and stronger than a human being, as well as able to both levitate off the ground and climb extremely nimbly (her ~special talent~). She is able to turn into a bat at a whim as well. Not quite abilities, but hindrances: she cannot touch the light of the sun, or she will burn to death, and she needs human blood to survive. Fun!

I imagine that these abilities will need to be nerfed, which is fine with me; if possible I’d like to keep her bat transformation with limitations, but the rest I’m fine with being depowered if you need to do so as a trade-off. Otherwise I’m open to your suggestions!

Inventory: A small vial of her own blood, which she keeps on her person at all times. Aside from that, just the clothes on her back!

Is it more cruel to love someone while knowing your relationship won’t last, or reject them for that same reason?

What kind of flaccid question is this. Is this Dating Game Show from seventies?

[Someone's Nervous]

What kind of impression do you think you give to others?

Intimidating. Regal. Irresistibly beautiful and frightening.

Do you think it’s possible to love someone without respecting them? Why or why not?

Of course. Sometimes love and respect have nothing to do with each other. Do you think I respect Laszlo? [She barks out a laugh.] Ha! I have been with this man for centuries. Don't be ridiculous.

What’s your opinion on your circle of friends?

Idiots. Gizmo? Useless. Nandor? Somehow even more useless. Laszlo, I tolerate because he is an attentive and affectionate lover. Like big fuzzy stupid bear who comes out of hibernation to make love and tend his garden.

But Jenna...Jenna is my perfect, stupid baby. My daughter of darkness. Her, I would like to keep with me for a very long time.

Do you think things like politics and history are important to know about? Why or why not?

The affairs of humans do not concern me. I have seen enough history to last many lifetimes, I have better things to do than read a book about Idiot the Stupid running for president of United States.

Do you consider yourself easily swayed by others?

I sway easily if you kiss my neck in the right spot, if you get my meaning.

How do you think you measure up compared to your peers?

Stupid question. I have no peers. Have you seen Nandor try to climb a wall? Pathetic.
